The Studio
Inspiring jewelry, handmade, one piece at a time
The studio is a very busy place - all the jewelry in the gallery is created there by Eve and her talented craftspeople, including wax carvers, gold and platinum smiths and stone setters. The work is interesting, varied and challenging.

The Casting Process

Here, the wax carvers consult with Eve before the carved wax models are invested to be cast. Pieces that are going to be cast in the same metal with roughly the same thickness, requiring the same firing temperature, are attached to each other by wax sprues. In the kiln, the hand-carved wax models are burned off, leaving empty voids in the shape of the carvings for the molten metal to run into later in the casting process.

Here is a better look at the sprued (connected) wax models before they are cast. Yes, you are seeing at least three colors of wax - each has different properties. In the next step, the metal flasks, which you can see standing behind the wax models, will be put on, plaster investment will be mixed and poured in, and then they will be vibrated in a vacuum to remove all air bubbles. Finally they are ready to be placed in the kiln

The kiln process varies by metal and type, and time in the kiln is anywhere from 15 to 25 hours. After the kiln, they are put in the centrifuge, Eve heats the appropriate precious metal with a torch, releases the centrifuge catch, and the flask is spun to fill the voids with molten metal. She repeats the process for each flask. Finally the molten metal has cooled and been removed from the plaster forms. Next, each piece/project is cut apart by hand with a saw blade the size of a human hair. Now the metalsmiths and stone setters can work their magic!
